bmi Airline Guide

Bmi operates flights from 15 airports across the UK and Ireland to Europe, the USA, the Caribbean and Africa. It's also the parent company of bmi baby which offers low-cost flights to popular European holiday destinations and bmi regional. Home base is London Heathrow.

Check-in

If you're flying to Europe you'll need to check-in at the airport 30 minutes before departure (50 minutes for Copenhagen and Palma). For long-haul flights get there at least 50 minutes before departure. Self check-in is available at most UK airports until 30 minutes before departure and if you fly from Manchester you may be able to check in the night before. Online check-in is open between 24 hours and 30 minutes before departure.

Luggage restrictions and security

Hand luggage: Economy passengers can take one piece of luggage measuring up to 55cm x 40cm x 23cm and one personal item such as a coat or handbag. Business class customers are able to take two bags with the same specifications.

Checked: If you're travelling to the USA or the Caribbean in Economy you can take two pieces, each weighing no more than 23kg. If you're travelling to any other destination your checked luggage can't weigh more than 20kg in total. Infants can take one piece up to 10kg and a fully collapsible stroller.

Families, elderly and disabled

Bmi provides free assistance to passengers with special needs from wheelchairs to Braille cards. Let the airline know in advance if you require help. Assistance dogs are able to fly in the cabin on most flights. Infants will be charged 10 per cent of the adult fare but must sit on an adults lap. Any child under 12 who is not accompanied by an adult over 16 years old is considered an unaccompanied minor and needs to be pre-book with bmi and pay a £35 fee (this cannot be done online). Fares for children aged two to 11 are full price for UK domestic and Western Europe flights, but 75 per cent almost everywhere else.

Selecting a seat

Economy seats have a seat pitch of 31" - 32". Seats can be pre-booked on a first come first served basis.

In-flight food and entertainment

In Economy on a European flight you will get complimentary drinks and snacks and a hot breakfast on morning flights. On short-haul flights from Heathrow you will need to purchase snacks and drinks. On a long-haul you will get the full works with complimentary meals, entertainment, newspapers and magazines. Voyager magazine is published monthly.

Pets, sports gear and musical instruments

Dogs, and cats can travel with bmi for a fee, but they need to be booked in advance and you may be asked to upgrade your seat. To avoid quarantine it pays to check the Pet Travel Scheme for the best route to travel.

Alliances and air miles

You can collect frequent flyer miles through Diamond Club. Bmi is a member of the Star Alliance so you can travel with other airlines in the group.
