Delta Air Lines Airline Guide

Delta Air Lines is one of the leading domestic airlines in the US and they also travel to over 100 countries making them the second biggest airline (in terms of passenger numbers) in the world. Delta Air Lines operates Delta, Delta Shuttle, Song and Delta Connection and has its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. If you're travelling to the US from international destinations you'll probably fly into Atlanta, JFK (New York) or Cincinnati.

Check-in

Online check-in is open until 24 hours before the flight, you can also check-in at a kiosk at the airport. For most domestic flights within the US you'll need to check in at least 30 minutes before departure. For departures outside the US you'll need to check in 60 minutes before departure. This varies in a few cases so it pays to double check before departure, for example in Istanbul you'll need to check in three hours before takeoff.

Luggage restrictions and security

Carry on: You can take on one bag with a maximum weight of 18kg (40lb) and dimensions of 114cm (L+W+D) and one extra personal item such as a coat or handbag.

Checked: If you are travelling from outside the US you can take two bags free of charge. If you are travelling within the US you will be charged £15 for the first bag and £20 for the second (as of 5/12/08). Each bag can weigh no more than 22.5kg (50lb) with dimensions less than 157cm (L+W+D). Again there are some exceptions to this rule.

Families, elderly and disabled

Children can travel solo as long as you let the airline know when you book. There will be a small fee for this. Infants under two can travel on an adult's lap and will be charged 10% of the adult fare. Children over two need their own seat and the fare discount will vary depending on things like the route and time of year. Passengers on Delta Shuttle who are aged between 12 and 24 or over 62 will also get a discount. Delta can provide assistance to passengers with special needs both during check-in and boarding and in transit. You'll need to let the airline know in advance and check-in early.

Selecting a seat

Economy seats have a 32" seat pitch.

In-flight food and entertainment

On a Delta flight you will be able to watch films and TV programmes either on an overhead screen or on a personal monitor. Some flights have Delta on Demand which gives you a choice of up to 28 films, HBO programmes, music and video games. While the Delta 777-200LR fleet gives you even more to choose from including up to 200 films. Meals and snacks are complimentary depending on your route and class; you won't usually get a meal unless your flight is longer than five hours. Sky Magazine is published monthly.

Pets, sports gear and musical instruments

Certain pets can travel in the cabin, including assistance dogs. Animals can also be checked in the hold, but not during summer as the hold is not air-conditioned. Musical instruments are checked as normal and you can purchase an extra seat for fragile items.

Alliances and air miles

Delta Air Lines is part of the SkyTeam alliance and lets you collect air miles through SkyMiles.
