KLM Airline Guide

KLM has a happy marriage with Air France and together they are the third largest airline in the world. KLM flights depart from 18 destinations across the UK and Ireland to destinations across the globe. The airline's home base is in Amsterdam and you'll be able to pick up a flight from all these airports: Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Cork, Dublin, Durham Tees Valley, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, Humberside, Leeds, London City, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich and Southampton.

Check-in

Airport check-in for flights within Europe is available between 120 minutes and 40 minutes before departure. If you're flying internationally you'll need to arrive between 120 minutes and 60 minutes before departure. Online and 24-hour phone (08705 074 074) check-in is available between 30 hours and an hour before take-off. You can even check-in on your mobile phone if it has web surfing capabilities.

Luggage restrictions and security

Hand luggage: each passenger is allowed one bag with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 35cm x 25cm and a maximum weight of 10kg. You can also take a smaller item such as a blanket or handbag.

Checked: On most flights you can check one bag weighing up to 20kg. However if you're flying to the US or Canada you'll be able to take two items each weighing up to 32kg with maximum dimensions of 158cm (L+H+W). Exceptions may apply so check before leaving. Excess baggage rates are high but you can save money by booking overweight pieces in advance online.

Families, elderly and disabled

Children can get a discounted fare and infants (under two) are charged 10 per cent of the adult fare. Children aged 5 - 14 must use the unaccompanied minor service and this needs to be booked in advance. KLM offers activity packs, special meals and baby supplies for families. KLM offers free assistance to passengers with mobility problems, including a special cabin wheelchair and assistance boarding and disembarking.

Selecting a seat

Economy seats have a 31'' seat pitch. You'll get a bit more space if you upgrade to World business Class or Europe Select. You will be able to reserve a seat when you book online, otherwise it will be assigned when you check in at the airport.

In-flight food and entertainment

KLM offers complimentary meals but if you have special requirements you'll need to let them know at least 36 hours before take-off. Everyone travelling on a Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 plus all World Business Class customers have a personal screen with an interactive entertainment system offering films and TV, plus text messaging and email, language courses and audio books. Other aircraft have large screens, but personal audio channels. The Holland Herald is the monthly in-flight magazine.

Pets, sports gear and musical instruments

Dogs and cats can be transported in the cabin, in the hold if it is not allowed in the cabin or as cargo if you are not accompanying them. Assistance dogs can travel in the cabin. Musical instruments and sports equipment is carried as normal cargo but you can book a seat for fragile items.

Alliances and air miles

KLM has formed a joint company with Air France and is also aligned with over 100 airlines and on-the-ground partners. When you fly with KLM you will be able to collect Flying Blue air miles.
