The official language of Majorca is Spanish but English is widely spoken and understood in Alcudia as it is such a popular holiday destination for tourists. You may hear small pockets of Catalan, Galician and Basque.

Money:

Alcudia is part of Spain and therefore the currency used is the Euro. While it's best to exchange money before you arrive it is easy to withdraw cash from ATMs if you run short. There are plenty of ATM machines around Alcudia although there may be a charge, depending on your bank. Credit cards and travellers cheques are also accepted however you will also find most places charge a fee on cashing travellers cheques.

Costs:

Since the introduction of the Euro, Alcudia is not as cheap to travel to as it once was. Prices are still a little less than the UK, especially for accommodation and restaurants. A simple meal in a taverna will be between €6 and €9. Drinks are also a little bit cheaper than UK. A large beer is about €3. There are plenty of bars offering happy hour deals on drinks and sometimes food.

Tipping:

Most hotel and restaurant bills will include service charge. Additional tips are welcomed but not expected. Drivers of metered taxis may expect small tips, as do tour guides.

Local customs:

Smoking is prohibited in public places in Alcudia. Take care if you are thinking of 'lighting up' as you may experience stiff fines. Drinking on the streets is also prohibited.

Safety:

Alcudia is a safe holiday destination. If you experience any trouble the police will be willing to help you. In the event of an emergency dial 112.

Health:

Tap water is safe to drink but may not taste very nice. Most shops sell bottled water which is preferable. Temperatures can rise quite high in the summer months so make sure you drink plenty of fluids to avoid getting heatstroke. UK residents are advised to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before visiting Majorca. It does cover most medical care but not all, so it is highly advisable to take out additional health insurance.

European Union passport holders do not require a visa to enter Majorca.
