The area around Almeria's Plaza Vieja and the Cathedral are great for taking a wander and soaking up the atmosphere of the old AndalucĂan buildings. This has also become one of the main entertainment areas with plenty of tapas restaurants and bars to choose from. It's very family-orientated here with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Near the port, seafood is a great dinner option with the fresh catch always taking pride of place on the menu.
La Rambla
This long road and its environs form the heart of the shopping district in Almeria, so head here whether you want to buy a few things to give to people as souvenirs, or shop til you drop. There are plenty of parks and squares along the way too so if it all gets a little exhausting then you can find a quiet spot for a rest and a drink or an ice-cream.
La Chanca
Charm abounds in La Chanca neighbourhood of Almeria, with traditional painted houses still inhabited by fishermen and gypsies. Some of the houses are hewn out of the caves and are a really interesting place to visit, you'll see the bright colours before you notice the houses. If you feel like you need a good reason to gawp at these people's living arrangements then there's a market every Monday selling local products and souvenirs.
Sea Front
The beach at Almeria is one of the focal points for tourists and locals alike, and it stretches the length between the port and Almeria Airport. Beyond that the Nature Park takes over and the beaches become much less commercialised. The marina makes for a lovely place to stroll in the evenings, and you can catch some much-needed shade in the Nicholas Salmeron Park just behind the ferry port, as well as a few smaller parks dotted along the promenade. There are plenty of restaurants and bars all along the water front so you can enjoy the view. Water sports of all types are popular and you'll have no trouble hiring equipment.
Further Afield
On a lofty viewpoint towering over the city is the Alcazaba Fortress. Outside the city there is such a variety of activities to choose from and plenty of landscapes to explore. From deserts to caves to volcanic landscapes Almeria is more than just an undiscovered beach location.
