Travel to Ankara

The capital of Turkey, Ankara is a big and bustling city with plenty to see and do. The Old Town, home to the few remaining ancient buildings of the city, is a must-visit as is the massive Kocatepe Mosque (it can be seen from most parts of the city!) and the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the Turkish War of Independence. The city's tallest building, the Atakule Tower, offers stunning views of the sprawling mecca below while the city's many parks are perfect for relaxing in during a holiday in Ankara.

Turkish Airlines offer direct flights to Ankara from London Stansted and the journey takes around four hours. For a wider choice of departure points in the UK you can fly indirectly from airports such as Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Belfast City with airlines including Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Brussels Airlines. Indirect flights can often work out cheaper than taking the direct route from London.

Flights from the UK land at Ankara Esenboga International Airport which is around 28 kilometres from the city centre. Airport buses are operated by HAVAS and serve the airport throughout the day, local bus #442 also stops at the airport. Taxis are readily available at the airport and a taxi coordinator will help arrange transportation for you for free. The journey to the city centre will take around 35 minutes and is metered.

Getting around during your Ankara holiday can be done using the city's public transport system which consist of buses and the metro. The metro is by far the easier of the two to use and very affordable. Taxis are also a cheap and efficient way to get round, but beware of drivers who refuse to put on their meters.

There's a wealth of accommodation options in the city from basic guesthouses to plush five-star chain hotels. If you are on a budget and looking for cheap hotels in Ankara head to Sanayi Caddesi which is one of the most affordable areas of the city. For mid-range hotels be sure to shop around online to find the best price.

For cheap eats during your Ankara holiday look out for the famous Doner kebab which is served almost everywhere. It's cheap, filling and very tasty. Bargain hunters should pay Ankara's Castle as it's home to an impressive number of market stalls and shops selling everything from carpets and leather to antiquities. Be sure to brush up on your haggling skills to secure a really good price.
