Electricity:
Electricity runs through 230V and most plugs are the standard British type. It is probably wise to take a North American adapter with you just in case.
Money:
Official currency is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar used in both Antigua and Barbuda. US dollars, traveller's cheques and major credit cards are widely accepted. ATMS are available in the major resorts such as St John and English Harbour.
Costs:
Antigua and Barbuda have a number of high end hotels and resorts, which can be rather costly. However if you're happy to eat and drink in the smaller, local bars and restaurants, the prices are much more reasonable. A beer in the supermarket is less than £1. The local markets have the cheapest fresh produce.
Tipping
The tipping etiquette in Antigua is the same as in the US; 10-15% depending on the service. Some restaurants & hotels will automatically add a 10% gratuity. If in doubt, just ask. Give porters 50 cents per bag, taxi drivers 10-15% of the fare.
Local Customs
Dress code around the islands is informal but conservative. Camouflage clothing (wearing or importing) is prohibited in Antigua and Barbuda. Greet locals in a courteous and friendly way and you will receive the same in return.
Safety
Antigua and Barbuda are relatively 'crime free' although be cautious and sensible with your belongings and personal safety. There have been a few isolated incidents of gun crime in recent years so be vigilant and check up to date travel advice before you go.
Health:
No vaccinations are required to enter Antigua or Barbuda. Pharmacies are widely available. Bottled water is readily available and advised for the first part of your stay. Exert common sense with regards to washing fruit and vegetables bought at the markets. Normal precautions with regards to mosquitoes should be taken. Unfortunately there is a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean.
Entry:
British citizens do not require a visa to enter Antigua or Barbuda but must have a valid passport and proof of return/onward travel. Cruise ship visitors do not require a visa either. Note that both Islands have a departure tax of $28USD.
