When to go to

Australia

The climate in Australia varies from the hot and humid tropics in the north, through the dry desert interior to the temperate south. Seasons, where they exist, are the opposite to the northern hemisphere, with December to February being the summer months, and winter lasting from June to August.

In general, most of Australia does not suffer from harsh winters or excessive rainfall so it can be a year-round holiday destination. Travellers in the know say that spring or autumn is the best time to visit because the weather is good no matter where you go.

Temperate South

South coast regions including Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales.
Australia's south coast has the most pronounced seasons with warm summers and mild winters. Rainfall is possible throughout, although the heavier and more persistent rain tends to fall in summer and autumn. Temperatures range between 19°C-26°C in summer and 8°C-16°C in winter. The south is also the only region where you'll find some rare snow in Australia. There are regular snowfalls throughout winter in the Great Diving Range, running through Victoria and New South Wales.

Tropical North

Queensland, central and northern parts of the Western Territory and northern parts of Western Australia
The weather in the tropical areas of Australia is defined by the rainy season from December to March and the dry season May to October. The rainy season is considerably hotter, with temperatures ranging between 30°C and 50°C, though this does also mean the region suffers from high humidity. By contrast, temperatures in the dry season are about 20°C. The period of the year just before the wet season is called the build-up and can feel pretty humid.

Central Arid Region

Central and southern areas of the Western Territory, southern parts of Northern Territory, majority of South Australia, interior of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria
Most of the interior of Australia is a huge desert, known as the outback. The desert regions have very little rain, and are normally in a state of drought. There's a huge variance in the day and night temperatures, though the region does still feel the effects of the seasons. In summer, days can reach 40°C whilst night lows are about 19°C. During the winter the days still feel warm at 16°C-24°C but the temperature at night can drop below zero.
