Off The Beaten Track in…Oporto

With its magnificent architecture, friendly atmosphere and fabulous weather, its no wonder that Oporto is a popular holiday destination! There’s lots to see, but there are a few particularly unique spots that we think you should definitely make the effort to visit…

See Ancient Rock Engravings in the Desert

This is a great day trip to take from Porto. It combines a train trip in the Douro Valley with a walk in the Archaeological Park of the Coa Valley. The train ride is very picturesque and when you get there, a guide will take you to see lots of different rock carvings – fascinating! The tour consists of a drive in a 4 wheel drive vehicle into a desert climate valley, where you’ll get a chance to see all the ancient carvings.

Jardim de Serralves

Fancy getting away from the city without leaving it? Pay a visit to Jardim de Serralves, where you can relax in a beautiful park, see livestock out in the open, relax by a duck pond or nose around a majestic country house! It’s a great place to get away from it all and truly wind down after a long day of sightseeing! The park shares an entrance with the Museum of Contemporary Art as well, which is also well worth a look.

Torre do Clerigos

Now, it might not be that off the beaten track, but when you’re up there, it will certainly feel that way! Head to the Torre do Clerigos for the most incredible views of the city, and take in some stunning baroque architecture while you’re at it. We’d suggest heading to the Cathedral grounds at sunset – and take a camera!

Casa da Música

This is a music venue featuring the architect Rem Koolhaas’s signature dramatic angles. Drop in to catch the resident orchestra’s free rehearsals (every other Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m) or watch the sun set beautifully through the Sala Suggia’s huge windows.
