As the former capital city of West German, a holiday in Bonn is brimming with culture. It's no wonder Bonn has a heavy musical influence given that it's the birthplace of Beethoven –there's a museum dedicated to his life. Music lovers should take a trip to the Oper Bonn as it hosts opera and classical music concerts. Kottenforst is a popular park on a sunny day – if you have the energy take part in one of the many guided walks. Finally the Kreuzbergkirche church is a stunning example of Baroque architecture - test your German in the language school.
With low-cost airline easyJet offering direct flights to Bonn it makes it a great place to have a city break on a budget. Various other airlines such as TUIfly, germanwings and bmibaby also offer direct flights – it's best to shop around before you commit to a flight to ensure you nab the best bargain. If you decide to take a holiday to Bonn, you'll fly into Cologne - Bonn Airport. It's sandwiched between the two cities of Bonn and Cologne like the name suggests.
Once you arrive at the airport you'll have to figure out to get to your hotel in Bonn. There's a public bus that runs into the city centre and takes around 30 to 40 minutes depending on the traffic. Alternatively you can pick up a taxi and there are plenty readily available in front of the terminal building. It may be worth enquiring with your hotel before you leave to see if they offer airport transfers.
As the city centre itself isn't actually that big, it's simple enough to take in the major attractions by foot. This is great news for budget-conscious travellers as walking doesn't cost a penny! But if you do wish to travel further out, the city's home to a good public transport system which operates throughout the night – perfect for when you have a late dinner or fancy hitting the many bars.
Like any other European city, there's an abundance of cheap hotels available in Bonn - just make sure you book well in advance to secure them. Try looking into B&Bs for a cheaper alternative to hotels. Cities can be a very popular place to visit during the summer months and Bonn is no different. Due to this prices for accommodation can rocket during this peak time. If you're on a budget take your trip during the spring or early autumn as prices will drop. The weather will still be pleasant enough to take in the stunning sights – plus you'll miss out on the hustle and bustle of tourists.
If you're planning to do lots of sightseeing during your holiday in Bonn, it's worth investing in a Bonn Regio WelcomeCard. This special card will allow you free entry to many of the museums alongside free travel on public transport. It will be valid for 24 hours and can be bought as a single ticket or a family ticket.
