Boston
Travel to Boston
Boston is considered the most European city in the USA and has consistently been a popular choice for both British and Europeans alike. Logan International Airport, in the east of the city, is served by a number of carriers from the UK including American Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Flight time from the UK is seven hours.
On arrival in Boston
One of the best ways to get into central Boston is on the MBTA subway. Both the Blue and Silver Lines serve Logan Airport and go along the South Boston waterfront before reaching south station in the heart of the city. South station is the main location for transport on elsewhere. Tickets for this service are only $2. Taxis are another option and because the airport's pretty close to the city centre, fares are quite reasonable. Car hire is available at the airport, and is especially useful if you're planning on exploring the areas surrounding Boston.
Getting around Boston
The subway or 'T' (tube), is run by the MBTA and is a cheap and easy way of getting around Boston. Amtrak also serves all three of Boston's intercity rail stations; South Station, Back Bay and North Station. If you want to travel out to Cambridge, take the Red Line from South Station to Cambridge. A taxi will cost $28-$35 from Boston centre to Cambridge and will take about 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Hiring a car in Boston is a good option if you're travelling further afield, although driving and parking in Boston itself can prove tricky for those who don't know the city. Taxis are abundant in and around the city and fares are no different to other American cities. You can see a lot of Boston on foot - after all it is known as the 'walking city'.
Travelling further afield
If you want to travel further along the East Coast, the Amtrak train service is an easy option for visiting other US cities, but there is no direct service between Boston and Canada. If you're heading to Canada the best route is to go to Montreal or Toronto from Albany or New York City. There are a number of bus/coach options from Boston to New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Fares to from Boston to New York are as little as $15. If you want to travel south to Cape Cod, there is a ferry service that departs three times daily and takes only 45 minutes from Boston Harbour.
