Cairo
Population:
19.5 million
Money:
The currency in Cairo is the Egyptian Pound (LE), with 100 piastres to the pound. ATMs in the five-star hotels are a great place to get cash out, and there are numerous exchange booths across the city, although the rates aren't so good. When buying things, check the notes you get back carefully to make sure they are Egyptian Pounds, and don't pay for anything until you're holding it when you're bartering.
Language:
The official language of Egypt is Arabic. English (and French) are fairly well spoken by many in Cairo, particularly on the tourist trail, although finding an English speaker is by no means assured.
Dialling codes:
+20 for Egypt followed by 2 for Cairo
Annoyances:
Mosquitoes and people trying to sell you things are the main annoyances you'll find in Cairo. The mosquitoes are dealt with by spraying yourself with repellent. As a tourist you'll find it harder to repel the persistent sellers! Be firm but polite, and don't feel pressured into making a purchase. Beware of Papyrus Museums, these are just shops after your money, often selling fake goods.
Entry:
A visa is required to enter Egypt at Cairo, and this can be bought on arrival in £ sterling or US dollars. The visa entitles you to a stay of up to a month. You must also make sure that you have at least six months' validity on your passport.
