When to go to

Cairo

Cairo Weather

As Cairo is perched on the banks on the river Nile on land that is essentially desert, it experiences hot summers with highs of around 34°C, and mild winters with average temperatures of about 14°C. Cairo can get cold during the nights and early mornings in the winter, and humidity can creep quite high in the summer due to the river. Rainfall is infrequent; the majority of rain comes down in the winter, which sometimes causes flash floods. March and April often bring hot dusty winds from the Sahara.

Cairo's Tourist Season

October to May is the main tourist season in Cairo, with December to February bringing the height of the crowds, and an extra flurry for the Easter holidays. Visiting at other times will mean that your holiday is very hot! You can cope with this by making sure your hotel is air conditioned, as well as resting for the hottest part of the day, and sightseeing again at night. Many people avoid going to Cairo during Ramadan, so if want to avoid the crowds and can cope with some slightly erratic opening hours then this could be perfect!

Events in Cairo

Christian and Islamic festivals are big in Cairo so you could head to Coptic Cairo for Christmas or Easter, or join in with Eid-ul-Fitr, the end of Ramadan for a three day feast. Elsewhere, there is the Belly Dancing Festival in June, the International Song Festival in August and the Arabic Music Festival in November. The Cairo International Film Festival in December, the Experimental Theatre Festival in September and the Cairo Book Festival in January showcase the talents of Cairo and the Arabic world.
