Essential information for

The Canary Islands

Population:

2.1 million

Money:

As part of Spain, Euros € are the currency across the islands. Resorts and towns will generally have currency exchange places but the rates may not be as good as the ATMs offer. Make sure to check with your bank what charges may apply for using your card abroad though as it may be best to get out the money in one go.

Language:

Spanish, with every island offering its own accent, and all of these are more similar to Latin American Spanish than that of the mainland. English as well as German are very widely known, particularly in the resorts, but a little Spanish may help you out if you want to go off the beaten track

Dialling codes:

+34 for the Canary Islands followed by 928 for Lanzarote, Gran Canaria or Fuerteventura and 922 for Tenerife

Entry:

All you need is a valid passport, the Canary Islands may seem exotic but as they're part of Spain they are easy for European residents to get to.
