Located in West Africa and made up of 10 main islands, Cape Verde makes a great holiday destination, and the beautiful beaches of Sal and Boa Vista are particularly popular with visitors. Take a trip to the capital city of Praia on Santiago Island and meander around the bustling streets or take a boat over to the beautiful island of Brava to really get away from it all. If visiting the volcanic island of Fogo be sure to check out the otherworldly Chã das Caldeiras (the Plateau of the Crater) and enjoy the stunning views. Then there's Santo Antão for great hiking.
Thomas Cook and Thomson are the only airlines that currently offer direct flights to Cape Verde but it's possible to fly with other airlines if you're willing to purchase an indirect flight. However this tends to be more expensive. With a journey time of just under six hours to either Sal or Boa Vista Airports, it proves you don't have to venture too far to find paradise.
If you want to take advantage of the archipelago, ferries are the cheapest way to go island-hop during your holiday in Cape Verde - but plan ahead as some islands only have a few departures a week. Planes may be quicker but they can work out much more expensive - plus you won't get to see the gorgeous scenery from the inside of a plane!
If you're using taxis to get around the island be sure to choose one that has a taximeter inside to ensure you're not overcharged. After all there's much better things for you to spend your valuable pennies on! Taxis do however expect a tip so be a little generous.
Luxury doesn't always have to break the bank and it's possible to visit Cape Verde on a budget. Just make sure that you book your Cape Verde hotel well in advance to snap up the cheap deals.
As most things are imported into Cape Verde this can mean that the cost of living can be quite high. If you're on a budget venture to the island of Santiago - it's said to be the least expensive.
Market stalls and shops will try very hard to make you part with your money so try your hand at haggling and see if you can pick up some bargains to take home for family and friends. One tip is to walk out of the shop - they may come running out for you with a lower price!
