Montserrat Mountains - offering amazing view, wonderful walks and plenty of slightly surreal rock formations - it's best not to go here straight after a run-in with the work of Picasso, Dali or Miro!

Sitges - an arty community just south of the city taking in a lovely coastal drive, plus it's got one of the best beaches in the area. It's the sort of day trip that Barcelona car hire was invented for!

Figueres - home to the Dali Museum. Bend your mind into new and unusual shapes with the surrealist works, then unwind with a wander!

Girona - a beautiful city sitting at the confluence of two cities, it's pure Catalan culture here. It's great for a day away from Barcelona's tourist throng and has a stunning Jewish Quarter.

Pyrenees - not too far to the north of the city lie the Pyrenees, where you can ski in winter, and hike in summer. A visit to the tax haven of Andorra could be in order if you like to shop on the cheap too!

Montseny - a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, you can expect plenty of flora and fauna, as well as beautiful views. A great alternative to Montserrat.

PortAventura - lies along the coast in Tarragona and it's one of Europe's most popular theme parks. Expect plenty of adrenaline rides as well as fun for all the family, just an hour drive from Barcelona in your hire car.
