dealchecker's guide to Cape Town

Between the looming crags of Table Mountain and Table Bay's deep blue sea lies the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. Close to the city you'll also find pristine beaches, fantastic wildlife reserves and important historical sites. The best way to explore this fascinating region is by organising car hire in Cape Town.

Driving tips
Although Cape Town is a great city for driving around, it does have a big crime problem so it's essential to be vigilant. When you're driving, lock all the doors and keep you windows wound up - your hire car will usually have air-conditioning. Be careful where you choose to park and never leave valuables on display. Oh and they drive on the left-hand side of the road.

What to see
Life in Cape Town centres around the vibrant waterfront area and offers everything from upmarket shopping malls, markets, theatres and live music to activities including the awe-inspiring Two Oceans Aquarium.

It's a short boat ride to Robben Island, one of the most significant historical sites in South Africa. First used by the Dutch East India Company, it became an asylum and leper colony. Later, under the Department of Correctional Services, it gained notoriety as a prison, housing former President Nelson Mandela for more than two decades.

Get out of town
Discover the region's natural beauty by driving to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve along one of two coastal drives. To the west, the famous Chapman's Peak route traverses Sea Point's cosmopolitan seaboard and Clifton's famed beaches. It leads you from the quiet rusticity of Hout Bay along the cliff-hugging Chapman's Peak Drive to the white expanse of Noordhoek's Long Beach. The route along False Bay road heads north, hugging the mountains, snaking past Fish Hoek (a popular family beach), Kalk Bay fishing village and through Muizenberg, which is renowned for its safe swimming and excellent surfing.

Cape Town car hire is just the first step; why not search for a flight to Cape Town ?
