dealchecker's guide to Edinburgh

The beauty of Edinburgh's architecture - particularly the Old Town - makes it easy to lose a few hours just walking the streets. However, organising car hire in Edinburgh is essential if you want to take day trips.

Hiring a car
As well as being an unmissable destination in its own right, Edinburgh is also the most common inbound destination in Scotland thanks to its international airport. This makes Edinburgh car rental a popular option for Scottish holidays.

Getting your bearings
The city lies on rising ground, from the sea on the north side to hills on the south. The Old Town developed in the 11th century and centres around Edinburgh Castle which sits at the peak. From the late 18th century the city expanded to the north through a planned series of fine neo-classical streets and squares, which make up the New Town.

What to do
Edinburgh is a city of fine gardens and open spaces including Holyrood Park (one of the largest city centre natural parks in Europe) and Princes Street Gardens. When you're writing your must see list be sure to include the famous Edinburgh Castle which has views across the city, the Royal Museum and the Edinburgh Dungeons.

Plus if you time it right you'll be able to catch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh festival - both in August. These events attract thousands of visitors every year so hotels are pricier, but they're well worth it. Hogmanay at New Year is also a great experience, but tickets go quickly.

Once you've got your Edinburgh car hire booked, you could look for a hotel or flight deal.
