dealchecker's guide to Glasgow

Glasgow is the third most visited city (by tourists) in the UK and once was the second biggest city in the British Empire. With three major universities and several colleges, Glasgow has a large young and cosmopolitan population which gives it vibrant feel.

Driving tips
Glasgow's city centre is compact and most hotels are located centrally, so if you?re staying in the city it's not essential to organise care hire. Glasgow does have good driving conditions though and finding a park is fairly easy. If you're looking to get further afield, expect it to take about one hour to Edinburgh, four hours to Manchester and seven hours to London. In Glasgow, as in all of the UK, people drive on the left-hand side and overtake on the right.

Art galleries
A big attraction in Glasgow is the art collections which contain pieces from all over the world. The Burrell Collection is in a gallery in Pollok Country Park and features over 8,000 items from Chinese ceramics to French impressionist paintings; while The Hunterian Art Gallery is home to the James McNeill Whistler Collection. Other worthwhile galleries are The Art Gallery and Museum at Kelvingrove Park, the Museum of Transport, the St. Mungo Museum of Art and Religion and the Museum of Modern Art. Many of the galleries and museums offer free admission, which helps your budget.

Other attractions
Shopping is big in Glasgow and you'll find everything from markets to high-end boutiques. It's also worth strolling around the University of Glasgow campus (est. 1451) which is one of the oldest in the UK and has a magnificent gothic style. From there it's an easy walk to The Botanic Gardens.

Finally Glaswegians are very passionate about football, so if you get a chance to see a game while you're there don?t miss it.
