dealchecker's guide to Lisbon

Although Lisbon is a fairly compact city it does have a lot of hills, so to avoid aching limbs it's best to organise car hire. Lisbon has a great mix of the traditional and the modern and its laid-back atmosphere makes it a very enjoyable city to visit. In the central city you may want to explore by foot, but of course with a car, you can also visit some of Portugal's other top attractions.

Driving tips
Firstly they drive on the right-hand side of the road and vehicles approaching from the right have priority, except when it's sign-posted otherwise. The Portuguese are notorious for their lack of patience on the road and incessant honking. This is particularly bad in the capital, so take care and drive carefully. Although car parks in the central city can be hard to find, Lisbon does have a number of large parking buildings.

What to see
Lisbon is set on seven low hills next to the Tejo (Tagus) river. It's a culturally diverse city, with attractive architecture, museums and monuments and Europe's longest suspension bridge. A good way to get an overview of the city is to climb one of the hills, one of which boasts a famous castle. From the castle you get a panoramic view over the city and river, which is particularly spectacular at sunset. Don't miss exploring the Alfama District, Bairro Alto, and Belem.

A short drive away
Organising car hire in Lisbon gives you the opportunity to visit some of the spectacular beaches nearby. Although not as warm as those in the Algarve, they're much closer and you'll find a good range from small coves to wide beaches backed by sand dunes. You'll also find some attractive villages close to Lisbon with grand rivers and castles.

Booked your Lisbon car hire? Why not look for a cheap hotel in Lisbon.
