Three ring roads circle Madrid so it's often possible to get to your destination without going through the centre. However, the road system in Madrid is complex, signage is often poor and road works seem to pop up everywhere. But don't let this put you off organising car hire, Madrid is a major political and commercial city, so driving through the centre is often unavoidable. The best way to deal with it is to plan your route before you leave home and if possible avoid rush hour.
Here are some places you may like to visit on a day trip. Located to the south of Madrid, Toledo is the former Spanish capital and has retained its medieval charm, with city walls and winding streets. The latter can also be combined with a visit to El Escorial's monastery and kings' crypt where most of Spain's kings for the past 400 years are buried.
