Naples is known for its narrow congested streets, but once you get out of the city centre the roads can be a lot of fun to drive along - after all it was the Italians who brought us Ferrari. Day trips by car
Naples sits in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius by the Bay of Naples and the larger Gulf of Salerno. From here you can visit plenty of towns and attractions by car. Here are some examples of day trips:
1. Pompeii and Herculaneum, these ancient towns are well preserved after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, stop off at Torre Annunziata, a preserved Roman villa, along the way.
2. Sorrento is a resort with a rugged coastline; visit the gardens of the Villa Communale. From here you could also explore the island of Capri.
3. Paestrum has three of Europe's best-preserved Doric temples from 450BC.
4. Caserta and Capua. The former has an 18th-century palace with gardens that stretch for more than a mile. The latter has an amphitheatre from 1AD and a network of tunnels.
