Picking up cheap Newcastle car hire is useful, although you'll encounter the usual big city traffic. Central city parking can be hard to find and expensive, however a nice option is to park on the Gateshead side of the Tyne. From there you can walk across one of the bridges or along the quayside into town.
A great way to start your holiday is by walking over the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. From here you'll get a good view of the city and all the recent developments. At night, head to The Quayside where you'll find trendy restaurants and bars for a great night out. Or for theatre, make your way to The Sage Gateshead, which is worth checking out just for its interesting 'slug' shape. Also worth a visit is the Hancock Museum, which features among other things, fossilised insects, animal remains and Egyptian mummies.
If you've booked Newcastle Airport car hire make use of it by visiting some attractions in the local area. If you get a warm day, head for Tynemouth which has a long golden-sand beach. Castle Leazes sits in a corner of Leazes Park not far from the city and is well worth visiting. You can take a tour or just relax in the gardens with a picnic. Meanwhile the Military Museum is fun for all the family. You could also take the A1 motorway up to Edinburgh - there are beautiful views all the way up to the Scottish capital.
