 Astrid & Gaston

posted by DVC_Chris on 8 June 2009 at 23:37

Spain has always had a very close relationship with Latin and South America, and some of the best Peruvian food I have ever had was in Madrid at a restaurant called Astrid & Gaston. While fairly expensive, the food was of a very high quality, and you could tell that it was authentic due to the ... more

When visiting Madrid, one of my favorite museums to visit has to be the National Archeological Museum itself. When I first arrived at the museum, I was impressed by the building itself which is a beautiful example of neoclassical architecture. My favorite part of the museum is the full replica tha ... more

After I saw a performance at the Madrid Opera House, my wife and I were looking for a place to have a night cap, and that is when we came across 1917 Blinis & Vodkas. It was not too crowded, but had great service and an amazing selection of Vodkas to sample.

dealchecker's guide to Madrid

Madrid is one of the very few places in Spain that attracts many thousands of visitors without the benefit of having a coastline. The reality is that there are so many good reasons to bag yourself a cheap flight to Madrid you won't need to worry about your tan.

How to get there
Cheap flights to Madrid are plentiful from the UK. The city is widely served by scheduled and no frills airlines alike with British Airways offering return fares as low as £59 and Easyjet prices even lower sometimes for as little as £30 for return flights. Madrid can be reached direct from a range of UK airports and although London is often the cheapest option there are plenty of bargains to be had from airports such as Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool, Belfast and Edinburgh.

When to go
Madrid is located right in the centre of the country on the Castillian Plain over 2,000 feet above sea level which gives it a very distinct climate. Winters can get very cold and summers are most certainly extremely hot. Add to the this the lack of a coastline and you get a unique profile in terms of great times to book your flights. Madrid, unlike the rest of Spain, isn't hugely expensive to get to in the height of summer, however, there is a reason for that, it's uncomfortably hot in July and August. But if you don't mind the heat, summer can be a great time to book some cheap flights to Madrid for a city break, particularly if you have a hotel with a pool. At the other end of the scale if you fancy a city break in the off season beware the weather in November, December, January and February because if you're expecting a balmy, shirt sleeves affair you will most likely be disappointed.

What to do
Well, where do you start? Partying is most definitely one of the city's finest attractions, you'll certainly never be stuck for somewhere to visit after dark in Madrid. Flights from the UK are often full of people looking to dance and drink the night away but what of the rest of the culture? Madrid is awash with fine galleries and museums, try The Prado and Reina Sofia which on their own offer way to much to cover in a weekend (top tip: Sunday entry is free!). The Palacio Real is a fine architectural sight and inside there are some royal artifacts and furniture to admire. Stop for a coffee at the Plaza Mayor and watch the world go by and then perhaps on to El Parque de Buen Retiro for a bit of relaxation before the night begins!

There's no way you'll be stuck for things to do in this city. Let us help you find some cheap flights to Madrid and you can get packing! If you're looking for a cheap hotel in Madrid why not use our hotel search and get a great deal on that too?
