Chiang Mai is recognised as another jewel in Thailand's well-stocked crown, almost matching Bangkok in terms of cultural and religious significance. It has a huge array of places of worship and its local craft community makes beautiful objects that it will be difficult not to buy.
It takes around 13 to 14 hours for a flight to Chiang Mai to arrive, including the usual changeover in Bangkok which most visitors will require to complete the journey. Cheap flights to Chiang Mai International Airport are widely available and once you land you will need to hop in a cab and make the brief transfer to hotels in Chiang Mai.
The system of public buses is only a relatively recent addition to the infrastructure of the city, so it is potentially easier to book car hire from Chiang Mai Airport so that you have a basic means of getting around following on from Chiang Mai flights.
With over 300 temples clustered in and around the city there is plenty to see and it's almost impossible to miss the places of historical significance once you have hopped on Chiang Mai flights. The older area of the city still has walls ringing it and within is Wat Chiang Mun, a temple which dates from the year in which the city itself was founded. Just outside the city is the gold-plated Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep and you do not even need to visit it to experience its glory from afar.
