The capital city, Las Palmas, has a fantastic historical centre characterised by Spanish style colonial architecture. The city is busy and vibrant and offers some great shopping, museums and a lively after dark scene. There are beaches there for the sunworshippers but those people who booked up their cheap flight to Gran Canaria solely for the sun are more likely to end up in one of the resorts in the south of the island such as Masaplomas or Playa del Ingles. These resorts boast fantastic beaches and in addition a host of entertainment including theme parks, bars, clubs and restaurants. Inland the island offers a rugged highland landscape including a dormant volcano with a 200m deep crater.
