With its colourful history and famous casino, Monte Carlo has long been a playground for the rich and well connected. These days, however, the area is also a hotspot for tourists longing to get a glimpse into the lifestyles of the aforementioned rich and famous. There is also a certain thrill visiting the casino area made famous by numerous movies and video games; from actors and actresses to politicians and royals, you never know who might have walked through the same rooms!
While getting cheap flights are probably not the first thing on the minds of the super rich, those on a more modest budget will be glad to know that flights to Monaco can be affordable. The nearest airport is in Nice, just over the border in France, and a number of low cost airlines fly there, including easyJet, Monarch and Germanwings. The journey from Nice to Monte Carlo is approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles). Buses, taxis and car hire are all available from the airport.
Monte Carlo can be explored on foot, although with some attractions to be found at the top of steep slopes, this can make for a strenuous day out. A bus network runs through the city and taxis can be hailed. Alternatively, Monte Carlo car hire is available with pick up points at both the airport and city centre.
Monte Carlo's most famous attraction is of course its casinos, including the eponymous casino that was featured in two of the Bond films, Never Say Never Again (1983) and GoldenEye (1995). In fact, when you visit, you can almost see James Bond sitting at the roulette table, coyly discussing matters of intrigue with a superbly attired villain. Slip into his shoes as you explore the layouts of the many casinos and if you feel like a flutter, you won't be disappointed!
From 23rd May 2013 to 26th May 2013, the Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place in the streets of Monte Carlo and other areas in Monaco. This famous race is considered to be one of the most prestigious motor car races in the world and is often attended by glamorous celebrities. If you're in the area, you could be rubbing shoulders with some of the glitterati!
