Located in the heart of Jordan, Petra is a unique city that was carved into rock faces by Arabs who settled in Jordan more than two thousand years ago. It's an archaeological park and is accessed through the Siq Canyon. As such there are no hotels in Petra, they are located a short drive away from the entrance to the park or in the nearby town of Wadi Musa (Valley of Moses).
Flights to Petra
From the UK, you can locate cheap flights to Petra via major UK airports with a flight time of between nine and fifteen hours depending on transfers. Aqaba or Eilat Airports are located nearby or there is also Amman Airport which is around a four hour drive away. Consider avoiding cheap Petra flights that arrive in Tel Aviv as this is further away.
Getting around Petra
There are a number of buses, taxis and minibuses that run to Petra. Once you enter Petra itself you can only move around on foot or by animal. For Petra car hire you will need to obtain a car from the airport as you cannot hire from Petra or Wadi Musa. There are plenty of other hire options available across Jordan but be sure to check for border crossings with your hire car.
What to see in Petra
There are at least eight hundred monuments in Petra from many different architectural periods, with the treasury being one of the most famous.
