dealchecker’s guide to Porto Santo

Porto Santo is the often forgotten smaller neighbour of Madeira lying just 23 miles off the northeast coast of its bigger brother. As such, Porto Santo is relatively undeveloped and a great place to escape the rat race. In 1995, the runway at Porto Santo was extended to accept, for the first time, international flights from across Europe.

Flights to Porto Santo

Direct cheap flights to Porto Santo are readily available during the summer holiday season, usually on flights chartered by the big tour operators. As an alternative to cheap Porto Santo flights, the neighbouring airport at Funchal in Madeira boasts more traffic and budget airline routes. From Funchal, Porto Santo is just a 15 minute flight or a short ferry crossing away.

Getting around Porto Santo

As well as cheap Porto Santo flights, cheap Porto Santo car hire can be arranged at the airport either on arrival or before you leave. Alternatively, taxis will happily give you a tour of the island at a reasonable price. For a little added romance, a horse drawn carriage can be taken along the front from the harbour.

What to see in Porto Santo

The island itself is essentially a long beach stretching for 9km with a bit of rocky island attached at one end. Not surprisingly, the beach is the biggest draw, especially when you consider that the larger Madeira has no sandy beaches of its own. Along the entire stretch of sand you will only find a handful of hotels. However, reasonably priced Porto Santo hotels can be found here.
