dealchecker’s guide to Santiago

Getting to Santiago

Santiago flights are mainly provided by Chile's largest airline, LAN Chile, with cheap flights to Santiago available from many major international airlines to the Comodoro Arturo Merino Benz Airport, which is situated approximately 16 miles northwest of the city centre. From there you can use public transport to get to the centre or hire a car.

The Funicular

In 1925, a cable car, or funicular, was constructed in the city to take visitors to the top of the Cerro San Cristóbal. The cable car still works today and once you reach the top after the slow ride, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of Chile, as well as being able to see a statue of the Virgin of the Church. Halfway up the cable car ride is the Santiago Zoo, which is suitable for kids of all ages.

The National Museum of History

Located in the main square of Santiago, the Museum of National History covers everything from Columbus to Pinochet. The Museum is best suited to Adults as it is not that interactive for children. There are no exhibits dated after 1973 when Augusto Pinochet came to power as his legacy is still far too controversial for the museum to cover without there being the possibility they may offend someone.

Shopping

The modern Bellavista area contains many jewellery shops that specialise in a jewel that Chile is one of the leading producers of, a striking blue gemstone known as Lapis Lazuli. The Patio Bellavista is a small outdoors mall, which has everything from fine leather goods to organic coffee to Chile t-shirts on sale.
