Holidays in the Canaries have been regarded for some time with a certain degree of snobbery by many of the British public but as is often the case with holiday destinations there is more than one side to the story. Tales of Canaries holidays, particularly in Tenerife, with wall to wall British bars, Union Jacks and all day breakfasts can often overwhelm some of the stunning features that the Canary Islands have to offer.
The region is made up of 7 islands of which Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria are by far the most well known to British tourists. The less touristy La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro are havens for those looking to explore beautifully rugged landscapes and experience a slice of unspoilt local culture. It is however hard to generalise about the islands as most of the seven differ dramatically from one another. Where you head for depends entirely on what you are looking for from your holiday. Canaries snobs would steer you away from Tenerife however, in truth, the often maligned stereotype of downmarket Brits abroad territory is being steadily replaced by more upmarket spa hotels and holiday resorts. The southern resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas offer fantastic beach holidays and a number of top notch golf courses and a sprinkling of theme parks to keep the more active happy.
Fuerteventura has the most beautiful sandy beaches in the archepelago and is a watersports mecca, particularly for kitesurfing and windsurfing holidays. Canaries holiday makers looking for the most spectacular landscape on the islands could do worse than head for Lanzarote which is home to the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, a volcanic landscape featuring blue and black lava flows and some of the island's three hundred dormant volcano cones. Beach lovers will also not be disappointed here with plenty to offer on the beach holiday front too. Gran Canaria may claim to have the most interesting city on the islands with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria playing host to some fascinating buildings and museums and an intriguing old town dotted with cobbled streets. In contrast the island also has plenty of lively fun on offer with several water parks and family activities.
