Paphos was once the capital of Cyprus and the area is awash with historical sites that are well worth a visit. It has all the amenities you need for a family holiday, while avoiding the crazy nightlife to be found elsewhere. Nearby you'll find Cyprus' second largest city Limassol, which is well worth visiting for shopping and gives you a break from soaking up the sun on the beach!
How to get there
Given its popularity as a holiday destination, you won't struggle to find a good deal on a package holiday in Paphos. It takes just 5 hours to fly direct to Paphos airport and it's served by all the major tour operators from London and regional airports. Thomson, Thomas Cook and First Choice all provide a wide range of package holidays in Paphos from Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Stansted and Belfast. However, you can make your own arrangements for a cheap holiday in Paphos by putting together a flight and hotel yourself. Try our search for cheap flight to Paphos and a cheap hotel in Paphos.
When to go
For those looking to book their summer holidays, Paphos can be tricky. You will definitely find the hottest weather in July and August but it would be very hard to find a cheap holiday in Paphos unless you've booked well in advance. For the best of the weather and kinder prices try the months either side of summer (September, October, May and June). Winter definitely offers the best chance of cheap holidays in Paphos, however, the weather can be very variable so be careful saving those extra pounds if you're looking for a beach holiday.
What to do
Paphos is divided in to the old and new town. Kato, the old town, has most of the historical sites and a cute little harbour. The area has been the focus of much of the tourist development so you have a good chance of finding cheap Paphos holidays in this area - especially outside the main tourist season. Neo Paphos, or the new town, is about a kilometre inland and much less crowded. There are fewer accommodation options but if you hunt around you should find a bargain.
The area does have good bars and restaurants and the food is generally excellent and good value for money. However if you also want hardcore nightlife then you should head for somewhere like Ayia Napa. There are many historical sites to check out and the 3rd century Tombs of the Kings is well worth a visit. If you want to get away from the beach then why not hire a car and drive out to the Troodos Mountains which rise to 6500 feet and are covered with lush pine and cedar forests. If you fancy a bit of retail therapy then jump on one of the regular buses to Limassol, where you’ll find markets and boutiques as well as all the modern amenities you would expect from Cyprus' second city.
