Being in Italy Bolzano has a special character. Visitors remark it is germanic, however, I would say it is the mountains. People are a bit closed, but much straighter than the average italian. I like the town for a mug of coffee and some apple pie.

From Bolzano you can reach the mountains in all directions, the prettiest being the eastside. Many huts are open till the end of September, and imformation about these things you can get from the Alpine clubs: CAI and the SAT.
