 Adams National Historical Park

The four generations of the Adams damily, some of the earliest presidents, is a fascinating place to visit. Admittedly it's a bit of a drive but it's nice to get out, see more of the country, and experience a little bit of history.

 Boston Tea Party Ship

Sadly only a replica ship, but still you get all the atmosphere and the story of the politics behind the famous tea throwing without it feeling too much like learning. The kids got really into the re-enaction as well, it's a great place to visit.

 Gibson House Museum

An assault on the eyes with its proliferation of ornate details and chintzy accessories, but an amazing place to nose around for the afternoon! There are so many great objects, and some really weird ones too. Fun and interesting.

If you only do one thing when you go to Boston, then it has to be this, it has everything: historical interest, human stories, a great walk, parks, you simply have to do this! We joined a public tour, but I guess you could also forge ahead alone.

dealchecker's guide to Boston

How to get to Boston

Boston is closer in style to a European city than almost any other city in the USA. The city is steeped in colonial history and sits along the banks of the River Charles, with Boston on one side and Cambridge on the other. Cheap holidays in Boston tend to start with short city breaks made up of all inclusive flights and accommodation. A flight to Boston will generally be run by one of the major transatlantic airlines and charter carriers. Flight time is about seven and a half hours from the UK and once you get there, the airport is only a short ride away from the centre of Boston. Car hire from Boston Airport will give you the freedom to explore.

Where to stay in Boston

Holidays to Boston can be reasonably priced, but you will have to shop around. Most of the major hotel chains operate on a grand scale and even American budget hotels can be quite pricey. The great thing is that no matter where you stay, in Boston or Cambridge, you are within walking distance of most attractions. There are some bed and breakfasts on the outskirts of town and small boutique hotels that sometimes do last-minute deals.

What to do in Boston

Boston holidays should start with walking the Freedom Trail, a 90-minute historical walk around Boston, once the centre of the American Revolution. The Duck tours are very popular, taking in land and water and the Italian district boasts some of the finest and cheapest eateries. Don't miss shopping in Faneuil Hall, Boston's equivalent of Covent Garden market in London.
