Travel Tips for Amsterdam

 NEMO

We went here as a family treat and the kids (and us) totally adored it. We thought they were lost to the factory production line forever, where teamwork seems to overcome even language barriers.

Gorgeous place with some truly astonishing plants, like the 300 year old pot plant. I can barely keep mine alive for one year let alone 300!!

Just an astonishing collection! I was expecting just art but there's so much more here too such as a HUGe library as well as the stern of a huge boat as well!!

Wow, this is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, and I totally loved it. So peaceful and charming, you could easily spend a nice lazy afternoon here with a lunch and a long stroll.

Amsterdam is seemingly full of tiny buildings with big secrets. Last time we saw Anne Frank House which was perhaps the most elaborate of all, and this time, this pretty amazing church hidden in the attic! So interesting!

dealchecker's guide to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a bustling, vibrant city in the Netherlands, known for its beautiful canals and exciting places to visit. Cheap flights to Amsterdam are available all year so why not treat yourself to a cheap weekend break?

One Weekend in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a compact centre but the attractions sprawl quite far, so for weekend breaks in Amsterdam it's best to concentrate on the Old Centre. Dam Square is the heart here, from where it's easy to visit Oude Kirk, all the historical buildings of Nieuwmarket and the red light district. Stay near the Bloemenmarket if you're after cheap Amsterdam hotels and look for one near the tram lines if you want to make the most of your trip.

More Attractions in Amsterdam

For longer city breaks to Amsterdam there's plenty more to explore. Head to Museumplein for the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, relax in Vondelpark or go to the heartbreakingly touching Anne Frank House. For a look inside the canal houses visit the Museum Van Loon, or hire a bike and simply enjoy cycling around the canal rings. Cheap eats can be found at the Albert Cuypstraat Market or for a selection of outside eating spots seek out Max Euweplein. And kids won't want to miss the NEMO science museum!

Best Times to Visit

With similar weather to the UK, you can visit Amsterdam all year round. Go in April and May if you want to take a trip to see the flowering tulips, and visit in summer if you want to spend more time in the parks and strolling around. Winter can be quite magical with the whole city decked out in lights that reflect in the canals, but it gets pretty cold!
