Travel Tips for Gran Canaria

 Walking

We went on a walking holiday in Gran Canaria and I loved it. There are paths that criss cross the interior and we came across so many awesome little places that felt like tourists had never been there before!

Stunning stretch of coastline and we made it our camp for the night so we could go to sleep with it and wake up to the sunrise in this gorgeous spot.

This lovely reservoir makes a great change from the day at the beach, there's lovely walks around and you can relax and enjoy the scenery too.

 Las Palmas

If there's one thing I love to do on holiday then it's SHOPPING!!!!!!! Las Palmas is amazing for shops with 2 huge shopping centres as well as lovely boutiquey areas in the Triana and Vegueta areas. My insider tip on places to shop here though is just by Las Canteras beach in Santa Catalina.

Great day out! Super fun for all the family with a great range of stuff to do and a nice big sunbathing area so I could just enjoy the weather.

dealchecker's guide to Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is part of the Canary Islands and has a reputation for sun, sea, sand and all day breakfasts, but hey that sounds good to us. There is also plenty of opportunities to have a relaxed beach break away from the crowds.

How to get there
Traditionally many visitors booked a package holiday to Gran Canaria where the tour operator covers the flights, hotel and transfers all in one deal. However you can also plan the holiday yourself by booking your flights to Gran Canaria and then get a hotel or resort deal separately. This gives you more flexibility in terms of when to go and how long to stay for. Package holidays in Gran Canaria are widely available from many UK departures points, such as Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham and Belfast and offer good value. Gran Canaria is also served by a number of scheduled and low cost airlines such as British Airways and Easyjet offering fares for as little as £60 at certain times of the year. There is a huge range of hotels available for different budgets and it's also easy to get a car hire deal either independently or as part of the package. There has never been so many options for sorting out a cheap holiday in Gran Canaria.

When to go
Gran Canaria is in the Canary Islands which lie off the coast of west Africa which gives it a superb year round climate. Winters are warm (early 20s centigrade) and summers are hot but not uncomfortably so (late 20s centigrade). That being the case, holidays in Gran Canaria are possible at any time of the year, in fact the island is one of the biggest winter sun destinations from the UK. The best time of year for a cheap holiday to Gran Canaria is in December, January and February with the most expensive time of year being July and August due to school holidays. Probably the best months to go are April, May, September and October when the weather is still hot and prices are reasonable.

What to do
There's no doubt that sand is a key feature of most Gran Canaria holidays. Gran Canaria is covered in the stuff and not just on the beaches. The famous Maspalomas sand dunes are certainly worth a visit, possibly on camel back. Las Palmas is a vibrant city characterised in the historic centre by Spanish colonial architecture but also bounded by some fantastic beaches. In the south Playa del Ingles is the liveliest beach resort, usually chokka full of Brits enjoying a package holiday in Gran Canaria.
