Travel Tips for Fuerteventura

 Playa del Mattoral

A lovely long beach with plenty of space for everyone, waters that area great for windsurfing and swimming and a good dose of peace and quiet. We came here every day when we were on holiday in Tenerife.

 Morro Jable

Be prepared for a German-centric holiday as this is definitely a hit with this nation! But actually they are lovely and we had a total laugh with some of them. Beautiful beaches on this remote section of the island and you can do all sorts of things here so you'll never be bored.

 Antigua Windmill

My wife and I took a trip away from the coast to see this lovely village and its traditional windmill. What a relaxing spot, perfect for buying souvenirs and for having a long and lazy lunch.

 Submarine Safari

It's a pretty expensive excursion but if you've got kids (or anyone in the family) obsessed with marine life then this is a real treat. I loved it so much, it was the highlight of my trip.

The best surf break we found on our holiday in Fuerteventura. It's a reefy left hander but keep am eye out for the rocks!

dealchecker's guide to Fuerteventura

Many of those booking cheap holidays to Fuerteventura are water sports enthusiasts and there's a very good reason for that. A rough translation of the island's name is strong wind and windsurfers and kite surfers flock here for that very reason. That's not to say that Fuerteventura holiday makers are exclusively water sports nuts, far from it, the island has a lot more to offer.

Getting around
Fuerteventura is one of the most sparsely populated islands in the Canaries and outside of the main tourist centres of Corralejo in the north, Caleta de Fustes in the middle and Morro Jable in the south, the island's low rise, white washed villages remain relatively unspoilt. The island is relatively small at a little over 60 miles by 20 miles so getting around is pretty simple particularly if you hire a car there.

What to do
You can guarantee that your holiday to Fuerteventura won't be short on sand. The island has 152 beaches and pretty much the whole of the rest of its surface is made up of the golden stuff too. The local landscape attraction is dunes and you can see plenty of them in the Corralejo Natural Dunes Park which you can explore on foot or by camel.

For those looking for a party, Fuerteventura may seem a little tame. The island does adhere to relatively conservative Catholic standards, however, that's not to say you can't let your hair down. The main resort centres offer plenty of nightlife although it's more laid back entertainment aimed at the water sports bunch rather than the excesses of the Tenerife clubs.

There are plenty of clubs on the island hiring out the latest kit for windsurfing and kite surfing, particularly in Corralejo. Summer maximum daily temperatures peak at 29C, although the cooling breezes make that very comfortable, while the low point of the winter is a beautifully mild 21C.
