Madrid holidays are always popular with UK holidaymakers, especially those in search of a little highbrow culture and art rather than "fun in the sun" seekers. Think about seasons as well as places. October is great for hotel deals, but you can still get some bargains in the summer. Centro de Arte Reina SofiaI know it's obvious but Guernica absolutely blew my mind. Loved it. There was other stuff that was great too, notably Miro, but the Picasso masterpiece was the best of all.

Plaza de la CebadaThis is a busy area with plenty of bars, great for staying in. We were just around the corner and we went out most nights, with our best memories from places on or near the square. A must for party-animals!

ThyssenIt's increadible to think of this collection belonging to private hands, the scope and range is pretty increadible, and you really can see the whole range of European paintings plus the wildly underrated American Nineteenth Century Paintings!
