All you need to know about holidays to Madrid

How to get to Madrid

Madrid holidays are always popular with UK holidaymakers, especially those in search of a little highbrow culture and art rather than "fun in the sun" seekers. There are hundreds of cheap flights to Madrid from most UK airports. The majority fly into Barajas airport, only 15 km from Madrid city centre. A short haul at two and a half hours flying time, you will arrive refreshed and ready to get mobile with car hire from Madrid Airport.

Where to stay in Madrid

Think about seasons as well as places. October is great for hotel deals, but you can still get some bargains in the summer. Cheap holidays to Madrid will involve staying at mid to low priced hotels, hostels (small, family run hotels) or self catering apartments, which can be the most economical choice if you are travelling with friends or family. There are also "apart-hotels" which combine the ease of an apartment with the services of a hotel. There are a lot of great deals in central locations, so think about the sites you most want to see before you book.

What to do in Madrid

Many people go on holidays in Madrid for the art museums alone, including the Museo del Prado; the Reina Sofia, home to Picasso's Guernica; and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, a wonderful private collection. Other must-sees include the Palacio Real, the largest royal palace in western Europe and the Puerta del Sol, a historic square at the heart of Madrid.

  • Centro de Arte Reina SofiaI know it's obvious but Guernica absolutely blew my mind. Loved it. There was other stuff that was great too, notably Miro, but the Picasso masterpiece was the best of all.

  • Plaza de la CebadaThis is a busy area with plenty of bars, great for staying in. We were just around the corner and we went out most nights, with our best memories from places on or near the square. A must for party-animals!
