All you need to know about holidays to New Delhi

It's India's capital city and compared to the larger metropolis of Delhi, New Delhi is a tranquil, surprisingly serene area with wide, clean streets and lush lawns aplenty.

How to Get to New Delhi

You can fly to New Delhi directly from London Heathrow with airlines including Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and Air India. The flight takes around nine hours. You can also take an indirect flight which is not only often cheaper, but'll also allow you to depart from a wider choice of airports across the UK. All flights lands at Indira Gandhi International Airport which is around 15 kilometres from New Delhi city centre. To get to your New Delhi hotel you can take the metro (the station's located in Terminal 3), catch a local bus or simply hop in a taxi (purchase a pre-paid voucher from the taxi desk).

What to Do in New Delhi

Despite being a lot smaller than Delhi, there's still plenty to see and do during a holiday in New Delhi. It's home to the seat of government for one, with plenty of stunning architecture to marvel at, from the Indian Parliament building to the beautifully kept foreign embassies. For shopping, bargain hunters should brush up on their haggling skills and head over to Connaught Place. While you're in the city, it's also worth checking out the many highlights Delhi itself has to offer, from the Red Fort and Humayun's tomb to India Gate.

  • Lodi GardensA stunning park spread over 90 acres featuring several tombs and architectural treasures that have rendered it protected by the Archeological Survey of India. This means it is well maintained and informative and a lovely spot for a morning walk.

  • Jantar MantarThe Jantar Mantars of norhtern India are truly bizarre looking structures and resemble 18th century rollercoasters. The famous Jantar Mantar of Jaipur was built by the same Mughal king that built this one in central New Delhi. For my money though, this one is even more curious, painted a vivid shade
