England's south coast is full of gems waiting to be discovered, just take Plymouth for example. This up-and-coming city boasts a rich naval heritage, one of the world's most impressive natural harbours and offers visitors plenty to see and do.
As it's home to one of the best natural harbours in the world, a boat trip is a must, and gives visitors a whole different perspective on the city. Cruise past sights including Brunel's bridge, the Hoe foreshore and the Navy dockyard. To save money an insider's tip is to take the public ferry to Rame, it's cheaper than organised tours and you'll take in just as many famous sights. Another not to be missed attraction is the Plymouth Gin Distillery, offering fun for the whole family and a chance to taste a tipple or two. If the weather's good, make use of the Plym valley cycle path – just remember to pack some snacks for the trip as there's no food or drink stops along the route.
Summer holidays also prove a popular time to take a UK break in Plymouth, but accommodation does book up quickly during this busy period so be sure to book in advance. If you're looking to save, it's possible to find cheap hotels in Plymouth at Plymouth University over July and August too. To avoid the crowds, you may prefer to visit in spring when the stunning surrounding countryside is in full bloom, or autumn which sees the city play host to two events: the Marine City Festival and Plymouth International Book Festival. Over winter, there's Christmas markets to enjoy too.
