Looking at a list of Regions and Departments, we find that the mountain departments are split between three regions: Pyrénées Atlantiques comes under Aquitaine; Haute- Garonne, Hautes Pyrénées and Ariège come into Midi -Pyrénées and Pyrénées Orientales comes under Languedoc. The departement of the Hautes-Pyrenees, or High Pyrenees offers just that - lots of high mountains. In winter it's great for skiing, with a sun a bit hotter than in the Alpes and snow just as white. In summer it's great for hiking and other outdoor activities. The Pic du Midi is the highest mountain, with great trekking and skiing opportunities. Other famous resorts include Luz Ardiden and Val Louron.
