dealchecker's guide to Vigo
Vigo is situated in Northwest Spain on the Atlantic coast. It is less than 25kms from the North Portuguese border in the Galicia region, and unlike many other areas in Galicia, boasts some of the driest and sunniest weather conditions to be found in the region. If you are looking for Spanish vacations in a beautiful city, breathtaking scenery and forty sandy beaches, Vigo is the place for you! Located on Spain's western coast just north of Portugal, the border city Vigo and the outlying area are home to some of Spains most beautiful scenery. For centuries, the fishing industry fueled the citys economy; however, recent oil spills have limited the amount of sea life present along the western Iberian coast, consequently forcing the people to find other work. In addition to the Spanish language, natives of Vigo speak Gallegan, a dialect which originated centuries ago because of heavy interactions between the Spanish and Portuguese peoples along the border. For that reason, there are large Portuguese and Brazilian influences in the city.
Vigo is a classical city. It has a population of some 300,000 residents and is packed full of wonderful architecture, including Romanesque and Gothic structures. The city is coastal, being located on the Ria de Vigo inlet - one of four making up the Rias Baixas.
The beaches around Vigo are very popular with tourists and residents alike. Most are small and sandy, truncated in places by spectacular rock formations that plunge into the sea. The view from many of the beaches takes in Cies Island - a breathtaking island surrounded by pure white sandy beaches and home to one of Europe's most important nature reserves.
