dealchecker's guide to Athens

Athens was one of the greatest cities in classical times and its modern counterpart is just as amazing. It's by far the biggest city in Greece with over a third of the entire population calling it home and there are lots of cheap hotel options.

When to go
The peak tourist season is in June and July which are normally the hottest months. With so many visitors it can be hard to find a cheap hotel. Athens is less busy in April, May, September and October making it easier to find good bargains on hotels.

What to do
Once you've found the right Athens' hotel for you and your budget, you can explore a treasure trove of archaeology. The Parthenon, on the legendary Acropolis, is the most popular attraction and can get very crowded at peak times. The main museum is considered one of the best in the world and features incredible exhibits from the classical and Byzantine period. Athens is a also a great location for exploring the mainland with organised tours to many delights like the Oracle at Delphi.

Getting around Athens has improved since the 2004 Olympics and the building of the metro system but gridlock still exists which can cause pollution problems during hot spells. The port of Piraeus is only a short ride away and has regular ferries to the many islands, making it easy to have a two-centre holiday.

Where to stay
The Piraeus Theoxenia Boutique Hotel Athens is one of the newest luxury hotels on offer. Better affordability can be had at the Athens Gate Hotel, which has very good reviews. At the budget end of the scale the Economy Hotel, Athens is well reviewed and considered excellent value for money.

When you've found a great Athens hotel deal why not grab some cheap flights to Athens and if you want to get out and explore maybe a great deal on Athens car hire too?
