When to go What to do Getting around Athens has improved since the 2004 Olympics and the building of the metro system but gridlock still exists which can cause pollution problems during hot spells. The port of Piraeus is only a short ride away and has regular ferries to the many islands, making it easy to have a two-centre holiday.
