dealchecker’s guide to Bergen

Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, is often described as the 'The Gateway to the Fjords'. Granted the title of the unofficial capital of Western Norway, it has become a significant cultural centre for the country and was named as one of the European capitals of culture in the year 2000. Cheap hotels in Bergen are available and the Port of Bergen, Norway's largest and one of Europe's largest ports, make this a city well worth the visit.

Choosing a Bergen Hotel

Many Bergen hotels are found in either the area around the bay of Vagen in the city centre (the oldest part of the city) or in the city limits of Nygard, Mohlenpris and Sandviken. The architecture in these areas, a mix of Classic and Art Nouveau, is worth the visit alone. However, the city has accommodation of all types whether you are there for a conference, on business or simply as a tourist. Cheap hotels in Bergen are also available near the airport, close to the Fjords and along the glorious coastline.

When to Visit Bergen

The climate in Bergen is fairly moderate all year round. The winters are relatively mild (Bergen is the warmest city in Norway in winter) and the summers are refreshingly cool, although there is plenty of rainfall throughout the year. There are many cheap flights to Bergen available at all times and being based in nearby Flesland taking the opportunity for car hire from Bergen Airport will often be a good idea.
