dealchecker's guide to Berlin

Berlin was once the symbol of the ideological clash that bitterly divided Europe and the world. However despite this austere legacy Berlin has been reborn as one of Europe's great cities. Constantly reinventing and redefining itself, Berlin is a model of efficiency and also the most bohemian German city.

As the national capital, there is a steady stream of business travellers so you will find plenty of cheap hotels in Berlin. There are more than 300 art galleries, some 150 theatres, eight symphony orchestras and around 175 museums, so if culture is what you are after then Berlin is a fantastic holiday choice.

Getting around the city is a breeze thanks to its great transport system and extensive number of taxis. Whilst there, one of the places worth a visit is the Reichstag, the seat of the German government. Nearby is the Brandenburger Tor, which once was surrounded by the Berlin Wall. The scale of the regeneration that has occurred over the last couple of decades is evident in the Potsdamer Platz which has become a mecca for shopping with a wide selection of cafes and bars to refresh in once you've finished browsing the shopping malls. The Alexanderplatz is perhaps the most famous square and the telecommunication tower at its heart offers the best panoramic view of the city.

Where to stay
There are a large number of 5-star luxury hotels in Berlin such as the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Berlin or the InterContinental Hotel Berlin.
