Located in the north of Queensland, Cairns was originally built as a base for miners working in the Hodgkinson River area. It then went on to become an important port for the export of gold, minerals and sugar cane amongst other things. As it serves as a fantastic base for those wishing to visit the Great Barrier Reef and northern areas of Queensland, holidays to Cairns are popular. In addition, it has a pleasant tropical climate. Cairns flights can bring visitors right into the area making it easily accessible for tourists and there are many good Cairns hotels.
There is a wide range of hotels available to visitors so, whether it is five star luxury or cheap hotels in Cairns, there something for you. The city itself is quite small so hotels are found throughout the centre and outlying areas. The more luxury hotels tend to be on the waterfront and offer a huge range of amenities such as pools, gyms, tennis courts, business and conference centres and of course, an excellent choice of restaurants and bars. Cheap hotels in Cairns are also easy to find and may range from basic dormitories to small, friendly B&Bs.
June, July and August (the winter months) are perhaps the best months to visit Cairns as the humidity is noticeably lower then. There is also less rainfall and pleasant temperatures. Cairns is close to the Great Barrier Reef and natural events and migrations in that area may sometimes dictate when you might want to visit Cairns.
