Chamonix is a popular year round destination for outdoor enthusiasts who partake in a number of sporting activities. It?s reputation was cemented early on being one of the first destinations to host the Winter Olympics. Thus in the colder months, skiing is the popular past time, with a diverse range of slopes on offer to the skier. Most French ski resorts are purpose built offering ski-in, ski-out accommodation. As a long established town, skiing is spread out but the type of accommodation on offer is again diverse. Many operators have chalets or chalet hotels in and around the resort which mix well with self catering apartments and hotels from ranging from the basic to the luxurious.
Many resorts, such as Flaine, are nearer to Geneva but with it?s great access on the A40 autoroute, Chamonix offers relatively short transfers and is a great option for a cheeky ski weekend or short break. It is also a viable and popular option for those driving to the French Alps from the UK for their annual ski holiday. The town also is close by to the entrance to the Mont Blanc tunnel which links France and Italy.
Chamonix is also popular in the summer. With Mont Blanc towering over the town, tourists can take the cable car up and view the famous mountain from panoramic views. Not surprisingly climbing is popular as are other summer extreme sports activities such as white water rafting nearby.
The variety of accommodation on offer and the popularity of the town means there are always good deals on hotels to be had but peak dates get booked up. Chalet accommodation tends to be linked to packages but more and more rooms are becoming available on a accommodation only basis. Location is perhaps more key in Chamonix so do check your chosen accommodation in the area you want to be in. Once you've selected your accommodation, and do click on all providers to check for the best prices, you can then buy online direct with that supplier.
