dealchecker’s guide to Coimbra

A small city in central Portugal, Coimbra has its own special mystique. Packed with interesting spots, we recommend getting lost in the city centre, enjoying an evening of the traditional Fado music and buying beautiful pieces of traditional pottery to take home as gifts. The surrounding area is fascinating and Conimbriga, the country's principal Roman ruins, lie only 15 kilometres away. It's a university city and as such is fairly busy during the week but relatively peaceful at the weekends.

Choosing a Coimbra Hotel

There are a number of cheap hotels in Coimbra as well as budget options for accommodation such as hostels. There are also several luxury and boutique Coimbra hotels as well as a few good mid-range options in between that offer excellent locations, air conditioning, friendly staff and good restaurants. If staying at the cheap hotels in Coimbra avoid the associated restaurants and try the local eateries and downtown restaurants instead as you will get better quality food for your money.

When to Visit Coimbra

As Coimbra holidays are essentially city breaks there is no bad time for a visit. In terms of weather, Coimbra's warmest months are June to September but even in mid-winter the temperatures rarely drop to freezing. There is plenty going on in the city year round due to the student population, with many cultural events occurring in winter. Porto and Lisbon are the airports most convenient to Coimbra and if you are planning on exploring the surrounding area then book in advance to obtain cheap Coimbra car hire.
