Gatwick is located just under thirty miles south of the centre of London and three miles north of Crawley, West Sussex. The area is most well-known as being the home of Gatwick Airport, which is second only to Heathrow in size and amount of passenger traffic in terms of London's airports. The airport also boasts the world's busiest single-use runway. Gatwick, first recorded as Gatwik in 1241, was originally the name of a manor on the same site, which was owned by the De Gatwick family. Its name is believed to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon translation of 'dairy farm'. In 1891, it became a horse racecourse and even hosted the Grand National during World War I.
As it is one of the world's major airports, Gatwick offer almost endless opportunities for staying the night. Whether you are on a budget and looking for cheap Gatwick hotels, or are simply stopping over for business, numerous accommodations to suit every need can be found throughout the enormous airport. With so many hotels Gatwick cannot fail to please visitors.
Being so close to the world famous tourist destination of London, Gatwick can be visited at any time of the year, although London's temperate oceanic climate makes it a more pleasant destination to visit during the summer months, when it tends to be warm and sunny. The abundance of Gatwick car hire allows visitors to easily make their way into the capital from their cheap Gatwick hotels and to make the most of all that London has to offer.
