Khajurahos rather isolated location makes it an ideal retreat. The main attraction for tourists is the group of temples. Both the origin of these temples as well as the history of the Chandela dynasty, during which era they were built, are not fully documented. However, it is generally agreed that they were built between 950 A.D. and 1050 A.D and that there are at least 85 of them. Although it is somewhat hard to reach (there is no train station), one should definitely try to visit Khajuraho. Varanasi is a good starting point from which to visit the temples.
Some travellers believe that all depicted carved scenes on the temples are of an erotic nature. However, this is not the case. There are three groups of temples and only a few of them depict the scenes of what Khajuraho is known for. It will take you at least a day to visit all temples. If you don't have that much time, make sure you visit the western group of temples that are set in a well-preserved park. The gardens are an excellent spot to catch your breath again (for whatever reason).
